Many hotels, airports and corporates actually ban certain applications, e.g. BitTorrent clients, Skype, from gaining access to the Internet with a combination of a firewall and a proxy server. This overrides your DNS settings and thus renders playmoTV non-functional in this situation.

Some internet service providers also utilise what is called a transparent proxy, which overrides DNS settings in similar fashion as hotels, airports and other entities that offer public Wi-Fi do.
